Robbers & Thieves

« back

A “Dylanesque” protest song targeting the various roles played by the politician, the soldier, the banker, the spy. At the turn of 2008-2009 Israel’s bombing of Gaza lost its top world news ranking to global recession and greedy bankers.

Oh I don’t buy religion, or the fear that it breeds
The way it treats women, the wars that it feeds
They would have us all praying, they would have us believe
Go beg us for mercy, get down on your knees

And I don’t buy Israeli, for I don’t like their ways
When soldiers kill children, they heap them with praise
Their orange and basil can stay on the shelf
They won’t get my money, I’ll buy somewhere else

The politician, the soldier, the banker, the spy
They say they exist to protect you and I
Snouts in the trough, pigs in the sty
They lie, they kill, they rob, they pry

They promise to help us to feel more secure
They make out they’re righteous, well meaning and pure
There are lies in the chamber and rogues in the house
Robbers and thieves and breakers of vows

(moothie instrumental verse)

The greed of the banker has come home to roost
They gamble our savings , they play with the truth
They take the money, while we take the loss
They take a fat pension, and we count the cost

Oh I don’t know the answers, for they’re so hard to tell
An endless equation, a bottomless well
To say we need changes it’s easy to see
If change is to happen, we have to agree

But I won’t buy religion, or the fear that it breeds
The way it treats women, the wars that it feeds
They would have us all praying, they would have us believe
Go beg us for mercy, get down on your knees
Get down on your knees

(moothie instrumental verse & end)
